PV Council Hears Proposal for Updating Right-of-Way Roadway Standards

Prescott Valley Town Council heard a proposal to update the Town’s roadway standards during a study session on Thursday, Sept. 7.

As part of Prescott Valley’s Strategic Plan, the Public Works team is improving roadway standards and guidelines within the Town’s rights-of-way. The team is researching various standards from local to national level in collaboration with consulting engineers WSP Engineering and Lee Engineering.

Updating the standards would ensure that the Public Works team and contractors do not overlook important issues in design plans and general engineering. The updates will also help the team evaluate and oversee projects done by private contractors who perform work in the public rights-of-way for both private and public projects.

Town Public Works Director Heather Ruder and engineers presented the Council with a proposal for new design guidelines for pavement markings, ADA guidelines, pavement cuts, and crosswalk guidance. These new guidelines will ultimately be provided in a centralized reference document for Town staff and private contractors. Once documents are finalized and approved by Town Council, they will be posted on the Town’s Public Works webpage under reference documents. This will take some time to implement, Ruder said.  “We will go as expeditiously as possible, but we want to get it right,” she said.

The updates were a discussion item, and no vote was called. Town staff will now bring a Town Code amendment for a Council vote in a future meeting.
